Public Space Description

The Verandas - The Verandas Bed and Breakfast Inn is an 8,500 square foot, four-story mansion located in the heart of the historic district of Wilmington. Two blocks from the Cape Fear River, this totally restored and award-winning property has been a successful Bed and Breakfast for two years.

The Inn offers an entire floor of beautiful public guest space: Large formal living room, Piano room, Breakfast Room (with stocked Butler's Pantry), Dining Room, as well as Reception area and terrace. Natural light abounds in the professionally, yet exceedingly comfortable professionally decorated rooms. While the beautiful rooms are graced with chandeliers, the innkeepers style is one of comfort, warmth, and informality.

Guest Room Descriptions

"We have made every effort to accurately describe our guestrooms in the hopes that we never have a guest who is disappointed with their room, and our Inn."

The Verandas offers 8 large guestrooms - All are corner rooms. Five have King Size Beds and three have Queen Size. Four rooms are on the second floor, and four rooms are on the third floor.

All rooms have the same first-class amenities: Color TV with cable (some VCR's) telephones with computer modem jacks, individual air conditioning/heat controls. Each room has a Top-of-the-Line-Serta Hotel Mattresses with hand-ironed 100% cotton sheets and Maitlesse bedspreads.

Bathrooms have garden size soaking tubs with shower, marble floors, marble vanity tops, and custom wainscoting and vanities. Large mirrors, supplemental heat, exhaust, lighting, and built-in nightlights are in each bathroom. Makeup mirrors, hair dryers, and Caswell Massey as well as other custom amenities are provided.

Rooms have original artwork, antique light fixtures, comfortable lounge furniture, and small desks. Either carpeting or hardwood floors with oriental rugs.

Second Floor - Four corner guestrooms with direct access to two verandas. These rooms have a higher ceiling and are more "grand" than the rooms on the third floor

Room 1 - Queen Size Bed - This very popular corner room has soft green walls and three large windows with wooden blinds and swags and jabots, which are in a peach and green colored fabric. The tapestry fabric on the small settee matches the fabric in the headboard. A very comfortable lounge chair in the corner is perfect for reading or dozing off. An antique desk in the corner is filled with Chinese dishes. The carved Chinese Oriental rug completes the room partially covering the dark wooden floors. While the bathroom is small, it has a marble floor, marble vanity, garden-size soaking tub and beautiful wallpaper above the custom wainscoting. Guests soaking in the tub can view the television. The room overlooks the back of house and is about five steps away from the door to the back veranda. The room recently was used in the filming of a movie.  $189/$209 Weekends


Room 2 - King Size Bed - his large corner room has dark green walls with wooden blinds and full swags and jabots, which are in shades of burgundy, navy blue, and dark green. Quality original artwork adorns the walls. The dark hardwood floor is covered with a hooked rug. The room reminds one of Williamsburg and has mahogany furniture. The small sitting area has a settee, small guest chair, and large wing chair. The desk is under a window, next to the decorative fireplace. A large bathroom has a marble floor, marble top vanity, and custom wainscoting, above which is a beautiful damask fabric wallcovering. This room is on the back of house and has a 10-½ foot ceiling, as well as a decorative fireplace. This room is within five steps of the door to the back veranda.   $189/$209 Weekends


Room 3 - Queen Size Bed - This large corner room is on the front of the house and has a dark wood floor with a small white rug. Complete with decorative fireplace, it is a very dramatic and bold room with full-length draperies that are made of a black, gold, and silver plaid. A classic wallpaper border in black, gold, and silver tops the light gray walls. The large bathroom is flooded with natural light from the window, and a beautiful gray, gold, and silver wallpaper covers the walls in the bathroom which has a marble floor, marble vanity top, custom vanity, etc. There are two comfortable chairs, an antique dresser with obelisks that hold the mirror. The small desk was formerly a melodeon and sits underneath a window, next to a decorative fireplace. A four-poster rice bed completes the room. It is one of the more popular rooms, especially for those with bold, but sophisticated tastes. This room has a 10 ½ foot ceilings.   $189/$209 Weekends


Room 4 - King Size Bed his large corner room is the grandest, largest, and most elegant. The bed is built up on a platform and has an upholstered headboard that goes to a crown near the ceiling. This large corner room has more than 400 sq. feet of luxury. It is located in the front of the house and has four large windows, which are draped in a Jay Wang floral, but not fussy, fabric. An antique sofa is upholstered in taupe colored mohair, and two Eastlake Victorian slipper chairs are covered in a decorative fabric with dark rose, burgundy, and navy blue colors. This room is used frequently for honeymoons, anniversaries, and by celebrities. It has an antique sofa, and three guest chairs. Two end tables and two small coffee tables complete the sitting area. The desk in under a window and overlooks a live oak. The room has a lavish use of fabric in rose/burgundy colors. The hand carved wooden Italian chandelier, with a dimmer, provides diffused lighting. 10 ½ foot ceilings.   $249/$269 Weekends

Third Floor - Four corner guestrooms with direct access to spiral stair leading to cupola on top of house.

Room 5 - Queen Size Bed - This is an appealing, fanciful, and peaceful corner room. It is especially good for long term stays. The room looks like a small European apartment. Painted in light blue/gray colors with beige carpeting, the brightly colored striped sofa and Victorian side chair creates a private area. Painted furniture with morning glories accent the room. The matching painted bathroom has morning glories painted on the striped walls. The Art deco armoire has antique baskets on top. Fabric balloon shades drape over lace curtains that filter out natural sunlight. This room is on the top floor and is located on the back of the house. The room has three large windows and has a 9-foot ceiling. Romantic.   $169/$189 Weekends

Room 6 - King Size Bed - King Size bed. This large corner room is very popular with returning guests. Walls are a medium shade of green, and the carpet is a multi-colored Berber. The decorative fireplace and the room trim are painted white. Natural light from three windows is filtered by white blinds, and balloon shades top the window frames with a brown French plisse fabric. The headboard of the bed is upholstered in the same French plisse, and has an antique wooden pediment. The wallpaper border is of globes, lending the room to a travel theme. The dresser looks like suitcases, and the room has a collection of Russian lacquer ware. A light green/gray tweed fabric covers the sofa and the furniture is made of cherry and mahogany. The comfortable rattan chair, rattan TV cabinet, artwork, and accessories continue the travel theme. A large bathroom has map wallpaper above the custom wainscoting. The room has a 9-foot ceilings   $189/$209 Weekends

Room 7 - King Size Bed. Newly renovated, this luxurious room is very sophisticated with soft browns, corals, and beige chenille fabrics. It is a very masculine looking room with full draperies, cornices, and wooden blinds. The paneled walls are painted a deep gold/brown and then glazed with a burnt umber finish. The bathroom has a large window and the walls are decorated with painted palms and monkeys. From the bathtub, there is a wonderful view of rooftops and chimneys. Decorated in bamboo, rattan, and with accessories and artwork from the Amazon River Basin, the room is very exotic and romantic. It could be described as a cross between "out of Africa" and the Orient Express.   $189/$209 Weekends

Room 8 - This room is 400 square feet and has a 9-foot ceiling. Four large windows and a decorative fireplace set the stage for the large Antique French metal and brass bed. A beautiful mahogany armoire and a red and beige striped sofa with two Eastlake Victorian chairs upholstered in Blackwatch plaid matches balloon window shades over Battenberg lace details. Lavish use of classic Ralph Lauren paisley fabric. The carpet is of a beige and white diamond design. Walls are painted a light blue, which is subdued with the addition of a faux finish of a gray glaze. The decorative fireplace is natural pine. From the sitting area in the room, about 45 feet above the street, the occupants have an eye level view of the sunsets from the windows. This is a very popular room and books up early. $249/$269 Weekends
